Westbound Twin Tunnel Project a "Go"

The Colorado Transportation Commission recently approved funding for widening the westbound Twin Tunnel.  CDOT estimates they can save $5-7 million by widening the westbound tunnel on the heels of the eastbound tunnel since the detour is already in place, and they still have the frame from the eastbound tunnel project.   This project is slated to begin in April 2014 and be finished by December 2014.  There are no additional lanes as a part of that project, so the widening will be done in anticipation of future added capacity.  Although the widened tunnel will still be striped for two lanes, there will likely be traffic flow improvements due to the psychological benefit of driving into wider, better-lit tunnel.

The weekend travel forecast:

Friday WB - Traffic is possible from 5:00-8:30 p.m.

Saturday WB - Moderate to heavy traffic is likely from 6:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. with the peak around 8:00 a.m.  There is a 30% chance of snow on the west side of the divide, so weather could be a complicating factor.

Saturday EB- Traffic is likely to build around 2:00 and peak around 5:00 pm.  Plan to leave after 7 pm to avoid traffic entirely.  There is a 30% chance of snow in the mountains, so weather could be a complicating factor.

Sunday WB – Light traffic is possible between 6:30-10:00 a.m.

Sunday EB – Plan for moderate to heavy traffic to develop around 1:00 pm, reach its peak between 4:00-5:00, and taper off soon after 7:00 pm.   Last year on this Sunday, the delay peaked at 50 minutes at 4:00 pm.
