Clear Roads for the Martin Luther King Holiday

Sunday Update: Folks really wanted to catch the snow Saturday. Early morning westbound traffic was the heaviest of the season. There were annoying slowdowns at the bottom of Floyd Hill and through Idaho Springs, Empire Jct and Georgetown even though the roads were clear and dry.

But skiers paced themselves better on the way home and there was only moderate congestion and slowing on the way back down the hill.  It is nice to think that people are paying attention to when they leave.

Travelers might  plan getting out a little earlier on Sunday and Monday morning. Carpooling is a good option. Check out the Dinosaur Lots. Remember to get on the highway coming home well before it slows down – usually around 2 pm – or “Leave after 6, be home by 8.”  The forecast that follows still holds.

Clear weather and clear travel is on tap for the three day Martin Luther King holiday. The holiday weekend will begin with dry roads across the I-70 corridor. Skiers will have their eyes on the morning snow report. Unless there is a sudden surprise storm, travelers can expect the normal ski season patterns to hold. When you are coming back from the slopes, remember “Leave after 6, be home by 8.”

West bound traffic in the mornings has been spread out this year with only infrequent delays, caused by accidents or road hazards. So, while you should stay alert for new snow and the distracted driver in front of you, we do not expect the weather related problems of early January.

East bound travelers coming home from a day on the slopes will start filling the highway around 2 pm. Traffic will grow – and slow – until 6pm at which point it will clear rapidly.

“Leave after 6, be home by 8.” If you want to avoid the long queue for the Tunnel or the stop and go through Empire Jct. and Idaho Springs, stay awhile in the mountains. Have dinner, go shopping, watch a game at a mountain sports bar. (Choose a designated driver, please.) You can leave Vail, Winter Park, Breckenridge, Copper or Cooper or any of the resorts along the I-70 after an early dinner and still be home for in time for a good 8 hours sleep.
