Tough Day on the Divide
The weather made the I-70 traffic news Sunday night but it wasn’t because of snow. The main culprit was wind that sent the snow flying across landscape, obscuring the highway, making Vail Pass and either side of the Continental Divide treacherous.
The eastbound trip back to Denver was slow even before sunrise and it grew slower steadily through the day. The worst of it came late in the afternoon on the west approach to the Eisenhower tunnel where it took 90 minutes to go the 9 miles between Silverthorne and the tunnel. It was pretty nerve wracking coming out of the tunnel on the other side as well, but once folks got below 10,000 feet (around Bakerville at milepost 221) the roads dried out and it was clear running home. Unfortunately, it was also a long day if you were hoping to wait out the grind – the cue to the tunnel didn’t really begin to let up until 8 pm.
Weather and heavy traffic gave our new mobile app a work out. Traffic on GoI70 doubled from last week; mobile users made up a greater percentage than ever before. We were pleased to see increased use by Blackberry and Palm owners as well as our stalwart iPhone followers. Let us know how it worked for you.
