Symbolic Kick-off to Summer

This weekend marks the beginning of summer for many of us, regardless of what the calendar says or if schools are out yet.  Memorial Day weekend traffic on the I-70 mountain corridor is typically spread out enough that volume and congestion are not a problem.  Eastbound afternoon delays typically don’t rear their ugly heads until we get into June.   To play it safe, if you travel eastbound on Monday, don’t jump on I-70 until after 6:00 p.m.

Construction projects, such as the Twin Tunnel Project, will be put on hold for the three day weekend.

I-70 road and traffic information is available on the cotrip.org website, by calling 511, or on the mobile app available through your app store.

Enjoy your holiday weekend!

Twin Tunnel Project – Week of February 11

Single lane closures will occur in both EB and WB directions February 12 thru February 14 from 6:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.  On Friday Feb 15, the lane closure will be for EB traffic only from 6:00 a.m. -5:00 p.m.

From February through April 1, traffic in both directions of I-70 will be stopped for 20 minute increments at the Twin Tunnels (near Idaho Springs) for preparatory blasting activities near the tunnels. These daytime traffic stops are anticipated every three days or so and will not occur during high traffic periods.

This is part of the preparatory work for the Twin Tunnel Project which adds a third eastbound lane over a four mailed stretch from the east Idaho Springs interchange, to the base of Floyd Hill.  Learn more at the project website: www.coloradodot.info/projects/i70twintunnels

Georgtown Rock Scaling work is also scheduled for this week.  Expect traffic stops of 20 minutes EB and WB   Tuesday, February 12, through Thursday, February 14 from 10 a.m. until sundown.

Fall Construction

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is crack sealing Interstate 70, requiring overnight lane closures at various locations along the 62-mile segment between the top of Vail Pass and Chief Hosa, just east of Evergreen Parkway.

CDOT will continue to adjust the project hours and the direction of work (EB or WB) to minimize driver impacts. Updated project location and work hour information will be distributed as necessary.

The speed limit is reduced to 45 mph through the work zone. Lane closures are a maximum of two miles long and work can alternate between eastbound and westbound I-70, depending on how the project is progressing. Traffic slowing is possible due to the single lane configurations.

“Crack sealing is a preemptive strike against road deterioration because it extends the lifespan of the highway – both the surface and sub-surface,” said CDOT Resident Engineer Russel Cox. “It prevents pot holes from developing and that’s a safety enhancement as well. We see it as a lower cost treatment in the short-term that saves money in the long-term.”

Overnight Lane Closures in Coming Week

Weekend traffic on I-70 is a thing of the past for a few weeks now.  Watch for the next travel forecast to come your way just before the Thanksgiving holiday.  Copper Mountain and Loveland have started making snow, so the ski season is coming soon!!

Overnight Lane Closures

I70 Construction-Week of November 14

Expect various EB and WB lane closures on Floyd Hill between MM 241 & MM 247 beginning 7:00 am November 14 & ending 4:00 pm on November 18.   Delays of up to 20 minutes can be expected during the night shift. All work is weather permitting.

The right hand lane or the left hand lane at mile post 208.6-208.8 near Georgetown Hill will be closed for both EB & WB traffic November 14-17 8:00 am-4:00 pm and November 18 8am-Noon. Only one lane in each direction will be closed at a time.

I70 Delays & Closures – Week of May 23

GEORGETOWN HILL
CDOT is planning to stop traffic on Interstate 70 at Georgetown Hill on Monday, May 23, for rockfall fence installation above the highway. Traffic stops are required to maximize safety for the traveling public.

Beginning at about 10:30 a.m., drivers can expect traffic stops up to 20 minutes on eastbound and westbound I-70.   Westbound traffic will be stopped at the Georgetown Interchange (Exit 228); eastbound traffic at the Silver Plume Interchange (Exit 226).  CDOT expects to stop traffic several times throughout the day, with the stops concluding by late afternoon.

On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (May 24 – 26), one lane will be closed on westbound I-70 at Georgetown Hill.  Drivers should anticipate some slowing through the area from 10:30 a.m. to sundown, since traffic will be reduced to one lane for additional rockfall fence work.

FLOYD HILL
CDOT will be closing westbound Interstate 70 in the Floyd Hill area again next week to allow full-width expansion joints to be removed and replaced across the Clear Creek Bridge.  Work is being rescheduled due to rain and snow this week.

All lanes of westbound I-70 will be closed, from the Beaver Brook Interchange (Exit 248) west to the U.S. 6 Interchange (Exit 244), during the following hours:

  • 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. – Sunday, May 22
  • 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. – Monday, May 23

Traffic will be detoured off I-70 at Beaver Brook – Exit 248, and use U.S. 40 (parallels I-70) to U.S. 6, at the bottom of Floyd Hill.  All traffic then will take U.S. 6 back to I-70.

To maintain safety due to additional traffic, law enforcement officers and flaggers will be directing vehicles along the 4 ½ mile detour route.  Temporary stops signs also will be placed at key locations along U.S. 40 where side road traffic normally does not stop.

On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (May 24-26), only one lane will be open on eastbound I-70, from the Twin Tunnels to the U.S. 6 junction, between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., for expansion joint replacement at the Hidden Valley Bridge.

Daytime work also will be taking place under the I-70 Clear Creek Bridge next week.  Occasional ramp closures will be necessary at the U.S. 6 interchange from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday.  Detours will be in place to maintain access to U.S. 6 and I-70.

All work is weather permitting.

I70 Closures This Week

Floyd Hill Overnight Closure This Week
The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will be closing westbound I-70 overnight in the Floyd Hill area this week to allow full-width expansion joints to be removed and replaced across the Clear Creek Bridge.  Replacing the joints periodically can extend the life of a bridge several years.

On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (May 9-11), from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., all lanes of westbound I-70 will be closed from the Beaver Brook Interchange (Exit 248) west to the U.S. 6 Interchange (Exit 244). Traffic will be detoured off I-70 at Beaver Brook – Exit 248, and use U.S. 40 (parallels I-70) to U.S. 6, at the bottom of Floyd Hill. All traffic then will take U.S. 6 back to I-70.

The bridge work moves one mile west to Hidden Valley on Wednesday night. Single lane closures will be in place on eastbound and westbound I-70, between the Twin Tunnels and the U.S. 6 junction, from 7 p.m. Wednesday to 7 a.m. Thursday.

Other Closures This Week:
There are several right lane westbound closures planned for sections of Summit and Clear Creek County this week for rail work and sand clean up.  A single EB and WB lane will be closed overnight in the Eisenhower Tunnels this week from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

It is construction season so be prepared, and be patient!

Early Ski Season Travel

It ‘s opening weekend for Keystone and Copper Mountain Resorts which means there are now four skiing destinations open along I70’s mountain corridor.  The weather is expected to stay clear through Sunday so that should work towards a pleasant trip along I70.

Based on the typical weekend travel pattern, one can expect the Saturday and Sunday eastbound slowdown will begin between 2:30 and 4:00 with a steady increase in volume.  The peak delay will likely come between 3:30 and 5:30.  Given that the ski season isn’t quite in full swing, the delays shouldn’t compare to those on a holiday or March weekend.

CDOT is working to finish up this project, but lane closures might continue into Saturday on both EB and WB sections from Silverthorne to the Tunnel.  Expect slight delays there, or consider Loveland Pass as an option to access Arapahoe Basin and Keystone.  Copper Mountain skiers might encounter a short right lane closure as they travel westbound from Dillon to Frisco, but again CDOT is striving to have that project wrapped up by Friday.

Happy travels!
