July 4th Holiday Travel Forecast

Count on lots of company when traveling I-70 throughout the next week. With the July 4th holiday falling on a Wednesday, it makes peak travel times harder to nail down mid-week, but looking at historic traffic patterns, below is a best guess.  The I-70 Mountain Express Lane will be open as eastbound traffic volumes dictate.

Friday, June 29 - Westbound delays will likely begin by 11:00 a.m. and end as late as 8:30 p.m.  Last year the peak delays occurred between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m. and resulted in 20 minutes extra travel time.

Saturday, June 30 - Westbound congestion should be expected from 9:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m. Last year traffic was at its heaviest between 11:30 and 1:30 p.m. with 60 minutes extra travel time.  Eastbound traffic due to volume is not anticipated.

Sunday, July 1 - Expect heavy traffic westbound from 9:30 a.m.-6:00 p.m.  Delays could result in as much as 30 extra minutes travel time.  Expect eastbound traffic between 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Monday, July 2 – This travel day is hard to gauge.  There will likely be a fair numbers of cars on the road in both directions, especially mid-day but last year there were no delays due to congestion.  Check www.cotrip.org to see how heavy traffic is before you jump on I-70.

Tuesday, July 3 – I-70 will see plenty of traffic in both directions, especially in the afternoon.  The most likely period of significant congestion will be in the westbound direction 11:00-1:30 p.m. Check www.cotrip.org to see how heavy traffic is before you jump on I-70.

Wednesday, July 4 –There will likely be a fair numbers of cars on the road in both directions, especially in the afternoon.  In recent years there haven’t been significant travel delays on the July 4th holiday itself but check www.cotrip.org to see how heavy traffic is before you travel.

Thursday, July 5 – There will be high volumes in both directions.  Westbound slowing is likely 11:30-2:30 resulting in an extra 30 minutes of travel time.  Expect heavy eastbound traffic from 11:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. as folks head back to the Front Range after the holiday.  Check CoTrip.org before you travel.

Have a fantastic Independence Day!
