Your Weekend Travel Forecast:
Traffic volume has not been significant on this weekend in past years, but to be safe, plan to avoid the peak times outlined below.  Although we should see sun Friday and Sunday, weather could definitely be a travel factor on Saturday.

Friday WB – Light traffic is possible from 4:00-9:30 p.m.

Saturday WB – Some traffic is likely from 6:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. with peak delays occurring around 8:00 a.m.  Expect wet/snow packed roads.

Saturday EB- While the volume of traffic is not expected to be significant, snow is expected Saturday.  Expect wet/snow packed roads and plan to avoid the 1:00-6:00 p.m. timeframe.

Sunday WB – Traffic has not been significant due to volume in past years, be we are having such a great snow year, more folks might opt to ski this weekend.  Avoid the 1:00-7:00 p.m. frame to be safe, and check one of CDOT’s real time info sources before you leave.

The expansion of the westbound Twin Tunnel to accommodate future highway widening will begin this month and be complete by December 2014.  Learn more about the project, and how to participate in the March 13 Telephone Town Hall Meeting here.

Your Weekend Travel Forecast:
The weather forecast is for snow all along the mountain corridor on Friday, on and off snow Saturday morning, with partly cloudy skies Saturday afternoon and Sunday.

Friday WB – Light to moderate traffic is possible from 4:00-9:00 p.m. Weather will likely be a factor.

Saturday WB – Moderate to heavy traffic is likely from 6:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. with peak delays occurring around 8:00 a.m. Weather could be a factor.

Saturday EB- The volume of traffic is not expected to be significant, but your best bet is to avoid the 2:00-6:00 p.m. timeframe.

Sunday WB – Traffic is unlikely.

Sunday EB –Moderate to heavy traffic is possible.  The past two years on this weekend, volumes have not been great, but to play it safe, Change your Peak Time and avoid travel between 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm.

REMEMBER, traffic metering is possible eastbound on Saturday or Sunday afternoons/evenings which means delays at the Eisenhower Tunnel.   Metering is done entirely for safety reasons and is not a congestion management tool.  Metering avoids a situation where traffic would be at a standstill in the tunnel, making emergency services access virtually impossible.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), along with a broad group of stakeholders, recently studied the feasibility of an Advanced Guideway System (AGS.) (AGS is simply another term for high speed transit.) The study determined there are at least a couple different existing technologies that could handle the I-70 mountain corridor’s grade, weather and performance criteria, but that it is not financially feasible today.  It is unclear what the next steps for an I-70 AGS might be.   The feasibility study is posted at: http://www.coloradodot.info/projects/AGSstudy/ags-draft-feasibility-study

Your Weekend Travel Forecast:
All it takes is one spun out car or one accident to throw a monkey wrench into I-70 travel, and there is a 100% chance of snow Saturday and a 40% change on Sunday.    CDOT is asking travelers to check the condition of their tires before traveling to the mountains, and Colorado State Patrol encourages slower speeds on a wet, icy or snow packed I-70.

Friday WB - Traffic is likely from 4:00-9:00 p.m.  Weather forecast is partly cloudy skies with a very slight chance of snow.

Saturday WB - Heavy traffic is likely from 6:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. with peak delays occurring around 8:00 a.m.

Saturday EB- The volume of traffic is not expected to be significant, but your best bet is to avoid the 2:00-6:00 p.m. timeframe.  Weather could definitely be a factor!

Sunday WB – Traffic is unlikely.

Sunday EB –Very heavy traffic is expected.  The past two years on this weekend, traffic started earlier and ran later in to the evening.  Change your Peak Time and avoid travel between Noon and 8:00 pm.
