I-70 News

On Saturday, expect plenty of cyclists on the road between Idaho Springs and Echo Lake due to the Mt Evans Hill Climb.  The Courage Classic, based at Copper Mountain Resort, will have cyclists traveling to Leadville, Ute Pass and throughout Summit County this weekend. Please give these cyclists plenty of room!

Historical data shows a pretty typical weekend traffic pattern.

Friday WB - Travelers might expect minor delays between 4:00-6:00 p.m.

Saturday WB – Last year on this Saturday, there were 22 minutes of delay from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., mostly between Floyd Hill and Empire.  Traffic could be heavier due to construction at the Twin Tunnel area.

Saturday EB – There were no eastbound delays last year.

Sunday EB – Traffic will likely be heavy between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.  Last year there was a 72 minute delay around 2:00 p.m. for a vehicle traveling Vail to C470.

Have a great weekend!

In the Works on I-70

Are you wondering what the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has in the works for the I-70 mountain corridor?  CDOT’s I-70 Mountain Corridor summer newsletter gives a great overview of current projects such as the Twin Tunnel expansion, as well as future considerations such as an Advanced Guideway System, or utilizing the shoulder as a third lane during peak traffic times.  Check it out here

Weekend Travel Forecast

Happy Friday everyone!

The Triple Bypass Bicycle Tour will bring thousands of cyclists from Evergreen to Avon, traveling over Loveland Pass on Saturday and Sunday.  Be on the lookout for cyclists if you travel that route.

Friday late afternoon westbound delays are possible, especially given the scattered rain storms in the area.

Plan for some westbound Saturday delays mid-day.

Last year on this weekend, Sunday eastbound delays were significant by 2:00.  Delays peaked at 141 minute around 3:30 p.m. (for someone traveling from Vail to C470.)  There were still delays into the evening, so best to leave the mountains before Noon or after 7:30 p.m. to avoid congestion.

There is a chance of rain throughout the weekend.  Keep in mind that rain early in the day, can cause an earlier exodus from the mountains.  Your best bet is to check the current traffic conditions before you jump on the road.  The CDOT mobile app, available through your app store, is a great resource.

Enjoy the weekend.  The high country is exceptionally green right now, and the wildflowers are phenomenal!
