COLORADO TRACTION LAW: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW TO AVOID FINES

Driving through Colorado in the winter looks vastly different than road tripping in the summer. When snow and ice hit Colorado roads, driving conditions can get dangerous quickly and adequate tires are crucial for safe travel.

From Sept. 1 through May 31, the Passenger Vehicle Traction Law is in effect on I-70 from Dotsero to Morrison. The law requires a minimum 3/16-in. tread depth for tires on all passenger vehicles, including all-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles. No matter the type of tires – winter, mud and snow designation (M+S icon), and all-weather (mountain-snowflake icon) – the minimum remains the same. If your tires don’t meet the minimum, chains or an approved alternative traction device, like AutoSock, are then required.

How do you check your tire tread? Insert a tire tread gauge or the Traction Law Measurement Card into the tread of your tire at several points on each tire. Make sure the tread depths measure 3/16-in. or more. The measurement card fits easily in your wallet and effectively measures tire tread depth when printed at the correct size and with durable material. Please contact morgan@cig-pr.com to get one printed for your use.

To keep drivers safe and the highway moving, the Colorado State Patrol will crack down on drivers who refuse to follow traction laws. Violators will face a citation for not following the law, which comes with a $100 fine and a $32 surcharge. If a violation results in the closure of one or more traffic lanes, the fine increases to $500 with a $156 surcharge.
