Major improvements are coming to the I-70 mountain corridor as construction on the Colorado Department of Transportation’s (CDOT) I-70 Floyd Hill Project is set to begin in early summer 2023.
The I-70 Floyd Hill Project will improve eight miles of the I-70 mountain corridor, from west of Evergreen to eastern Idaho Springs, to address the bottleneck and improve travel time reliability. Additionally, the project will rebuild bridges to today’s safety standards, build a frontage road between US 6 and Hidden Valley/Central City Parkway, and straighten curves to improve safety.
Project features include:
- • Adding a third westbound travel lane in this two-lane bottleneck of I-70; this new lane would be a
tolled Express Lane 24/7 - • Constructing a missing two-mile section of the frontage road between Evergreen and Idaho
Springs - • Adding an eastbound auxiliary lane to reduce conflicts with slow-moving freight and other
vehicles in the uphill section of Floyd Hill - • Improving traffic flow and access at interchanges and intersections
- • Improving design speeds and stopping sight distance on horizontal curves
- • Improving the Clear Creek Greenway trail
- • Implementing environmental mitigation to enhance wildlife connectivity, air and water quality,
stream conditions, and recreation
Construction underway on two Floyd Hill Early Projects
Two I-70 Floyd Hill Early Projects have started construction so far: the I-70 Genesee Wildlife Underpass and the US 40 & Floyd Hill Roundabouts project.
The I-70 Genesee Wildlife Underpass project will build a wildlife underpass under I-70 between the Lookout Mountain and Genesee exits. Additionally, crews will construct wildlife fencing along both eastbound and westbound I-70 that extends from Genesee (Exit 254) to Lookout Mountain (Exit 256). Crews recently added pavement to westbound I-70 and switched traffic over to this pavement, allowing crews to complete the majority of construction on the wildlife underpass without major impact to motorists.
The US 40 & Floyd Hill Roundabouts project will build two single-lane roundabouts at the intersections of US 40 and Homestead Road, and US 40 and County Road 65. Crews recently completed emergency erosion repair between US 40 and I-70 for the project, and are currently relocating power poles and gas lines. Motorists can anticipate daytime single lane closures and flagging, Mondays through Fridays, on US 40 between Homestead Road and CR 65 during this utility work. In the next month, storm sewer installation is anticipated to begin, which will cause traffic impacts to Homestead Road.
