Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer and also represents the beginning of summer travel. Nationwide, more than 42.3 million Americans are expected to travel this weekend between Thursday, May 25, and Monday, May 29, according to AAA. That’s an increase of 7% compared to 2022. For the I-70 Mountain Corridor, that means a lot of vehicles on the roadway. In May 2022, more than 227,000 vehicles traveled through the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel each weekend.

The I-70 Mountain Express Lanes (MEXL) are a temporary congestion relief solution for 13-miles of the I-70 mountain corridor between Idaho Springs and Empire in Clear Creek County. These lanes are operational only during peak travel times, and they are a part of Colorado's Express Lane system managed by the Colorado Transportation Investment Office (CTIO).

Nearly one year ago, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) launched Pegasus, the state’s first express shuttle service. As Pegasus approaches its first anniversary, the service is experiencing steady ridership growth and service expansion. More than 12,000 passengers have used Pegasus since May 2022, and based on this growth, CDOT has increased the number of service days and added vans to their fleet to serve people commuting between Denver and Avon.

The Colorado Department of Transportation released $600,000 worth of grant funding to Colorado communities to help reduce congestion and carbon emissions. The I-70 Coalition is one of 12 grant recipients and will receive $49,000 to expand access to website and video resources for Spanish speaking audiences in addition to creating new educational resources in English.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and Colorado State Patrol (CSP) are asking the traveling public to follow the speed limit on I-70 in Glenwood Canyon and drive for the conditions, especially as winter weather continues through the coming weeks and months. Following a series of crashes that have caused extended closures of the interstate, CDOT and CSP are urging all drivers to redouble efforts to follow best safety practices. Driving too fast for conditions has contributed or caused all of the crash closures in the Canyon so far in 2023.

In December 2022, the Colorado Department of Transportation re-launched its popular bus service, Snowstang, for the 2022-2023 ski season, providing transit alternatives to some of the state’s best ski destinations. Snowstang offers roundtrip express bus service to Arapahoe Basin, Copper Mountain, Loveland Ski Area, Steamboat Springs and, new this year, Breckenridge.

In 2021, Coloradans were given another choice in how to travel around the state when TreadShare – Colorado’s carpool app – launched. Since then, TreadShare has facilitated more than 200 rides, which helped travelers save money on gas and reduced carbon emissions. TreadShare recently updated the app and launched new features, making it easier than ever to create a carpool.

Bustang to Broncos expanded west along I-70 as part of a pilot program for four regular-season Broncos games, including the Las Vegas Raiders, Sunday, Nov. 20. Pick up is at the Vail Transportation Center, Frisco Transfer Center, or Idaho Springs Bus Shelter, located at 13th and Idaho St., with drop off at Empower Field at Mile High.

Fall colors are in full effect in the Colorado mountains, but so is traffic congestion along I-70 as Front Rangers flock to the high country for leaf peeping season. As motorists plan their trip, using transit options, like Bustang or Pegasus, or carpooling via the TreadShare app, takes vehicles off the road and allows for a more enjoyable ride. For those who drive, using the GoI70 travel forecast can help plan the least congested travel times on the I-70 mountain corridor.

In winter 2021/2022, four Colorado ski areas opted to partner with the Colorado Department of Transportation on their ski bus service, Snowstang. This service allows riders to avoid winter driving and provides the ability to relax instead of dealing with traffic. Through this partnership, Snowstang limited greenhouse gas emissions, took vehicles off I-70 and took stress off overwhelmed resort parking lots allowing more customers to hit the slopes.

Today, Congressman Joe Neguse announced the Colorado Department of Transportation and Clear Creek County are the recipients of a $100,000,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation INFRA grants program. Funding will go toward improving the I-70 Mountain Corridor. The INFRA (Nationally Significant Multimodal Freight & Highway Projects) program awards grants for multimodal freight and highway projects that improve the safety, efficiency, and reliability of the movement of freight and people in and across rural and urban areas.

As the Colorado Department of Transportation continues to meet transit needs along the Interstate 70 mountain corridor through services including Bustang, Outrider, Snowstang and the newly launched Pegasus shuttle, data commissioned by the I-70 Coalition shows satisfied transit passengers and repeat riders. Over 90% of riders on both Bustang and Snowstang responded positively about safety, customer service and the overall experience.

After nearly a year of testing and toll equipment installations, the Westbound I-70 Mountain Express Lane will begin tolling Thursday, July 7, 2022. Similar to the Eastbound I-70 Mountain Express Lane that opened in 2015, this 12-mile-long managed lane features traffic management systems to improve mobility and provide westbound I-70 drivers with a reliable, time-saving option during peak travel periods.

In March 2022, Gov. Jared Polis signed House Bill 22-1074, which allows the Colorado Department of Transportation to issue fines to drivers using the I-70 Mountain Express Lanes in Clear Creek County unlawfully when they are closed. State data indicates that nearly 50,000 motorists used the eastbound I-70 Mountain Express Lane illegally in 2020. Motorists using the I-70 Mountain Express Lanes illegally while closed will face a fine of up to $250, which they can expect to receive by mail.

The West Vail Pass Auxiliary Lanes project is nearing the completion of a planning process that started back in 2017. Public input through 10/21 is needed! With the completion of these planning steps and the grant money awarded to CDOT earlier this Summer, the Vail Pass Aux Lanes move closer to becoming a reality.
