I-70 Coalition Launches I-70 Mountain Corridor User Survey

Funded through a Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) grant, the I-70 Coalition is launching a survey that will help us better understand how people use the I-70 mountain corridor. The survey results will help us learn about travel habits and the likelihood of travelers to use transit options, like Bustang, Pegasus or Snowstang. The results of the survey will inform our work and where we focus our efforts in advocating for better travel options along the I-70 mountain corridor.
GoI70 Launches New Educational Videos

The five videos were developed as part of a $49,000 grant the I-70 Coalition received from the Colorado Department of Transportation. The Colorado Department of Transportation is re-launching its popular bus service, Snowstang, Saturday, Dec. 16, for the 2023-2024 ski season – providing transit alternatives to some of the state’s best ski destinations. Colorado State Patrol Troopers Prepare for Chain Law Season

Each fall and spring, Colorado State Patrol (CSP) Troopers based along the I-70 Mountain Corridor ensure commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) are prepared for Colorado’s Chain Law, which requires all CMVs traveling along I-70 between Golden (Mile Point 259) and Dotsero (Mile Point 133) to have chains or approved alternate traction devices from Sept. 1 through May 31. Sun Glare Safety Closures Start Sunday, Nov. 5

Beginning Sunday, Nov. 5, when daylight savings ends, the sun’s angle in combination with inclining hills along I-70 at Floyd Hill can create a blinding sun glare for drivers traveling on eastbound I-70 in the early morning hours. The glare occurs annually during the fall and winter months, usually November through February, and can occur as far east as Genesee beginning around sunrise. Because of this, it is sometimes necessary to close eastbound I-70 in the early morning hours to ensure driver safety.

Governor Polis signed the new "Move Over Law" into effect earlier this year, marking a substantial shift in safeguarding drivers on Colorado roads. Unlike its predecessor, which solely required drivers to yield to emergency vehicles, tow trucks, and public utility service vehicles, the revised law mandates that drivers move over a lane for any stationary vehicle on a highway displaying its hazard lights.

The East Section of the I-70 Floyd Hill Project is in full swing! Since the Project began July 6, crews have completed pavement repairs on I-70, finished their first traffic shift on eastbound I-70 and established the workzone by setting up signage and temporary concrete barrier. Crews will begin rock scaling operations in late-July prior to beginning rock blasting activities, which are scheduled to begin in mid-August. Rock scaling and blasting will take place adjacent to the eastbound lanes of I-70 between the US 6 interchange and Hyland Drive (Mile Point 247). About 20 feet of material will be removed alongside the outside lane to widen eastbound I-70 for an extended on-ramp from US 6 to the top of Floyd Hill.

Beginning Wednesday, June 21, 2023 the Colorado Transportation Investment Office (the government-owned business within CDOT that oversees Colorado’s Express Lanes) will begin enforcing safety laws on the I-70 Mountain Express Lanes. The program encourages safe driving on CTIO’s network of Express Lanes by using sophisticated roadside technology to enforce Express Lane rules. Violators identified by this technology will be issued a civil penalty via mail based on the registered address of the vehicle’s license plate. Learn more!

Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer and also represents the beginning of summer travel. Nationwide, more than 42.3 million Americans are expected to travel this weekend between Thursday, May 25, and Monday, May 29, according to AAA. That’s an increase of 7% compared to 2022. For the I-70 Mountain Corridor, that means a lot of vehicles on the roadway. In May 2022, more than 227,000 vehicles traveled through the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel each weekend.

The I-70 Mountain Express Lanes (MEXL) are a temporary congestion relief solution for 13-miles of the I-70 mountain corridor between Idaho Springs and Empire in Clear Creek County. These lanes are operational only during peak travel times, and they are a part of Colorado's Express Lane system managed by the Colorado Transportation Investment Office (CTIO).

Nearly one year ago, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) launched Pegasus, the state’s first express shuttle service. As Pegasus approaches its first anniversary, the service is experiencing steady ridership growth and service expansion. More than 12,000 passengers have used Pegasus since May 2022, and based on this growth, CDOT has increased the number of service days and added vans to their fleet to serve people commuting between Denver and Avon.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and Colorado State Patrol (CSP) are asking the traveling public to follow the speed limit on I-70 in Glenwood Canyon and drive for the conditions, especially as winter weather continues through the coming weeks and months. Following a series of crashes that have caused extended closures of the interstate, CDOT and CSP are urging all drivers to redouble efforts to follow best safety practices. Driving too fast for conditions has contributed or caused all of the crash closures in the Canyon so far in 2023.

In 2021, Coloradans were given another choice in how to travel around the state when TreadShare – Colorado’s carpool app – launched. Since then, TreadShare has facilitated more than 200 rides, which helped travelers save money on gas and reduced carbon emissions. In winter 2021/2022, four Colorado ski areas opted to partner with the Colorado Department of Transportation on their ski bus service, Snowstang. This service allows riders to avoid winter driving and provides the ability to relax instead of dealing with traffic. Through this partnership, Snowstang limited greenhouse gas emissions, took vehicles off I-70 and took stress off overwhelmed resort parking lots allowing more customers to hit the slopes.

Today, Congressman Joe Neguse announced the Colorado Department of Transportation and Clear Creek County are the recipients of a $100,000,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation INFRA grants program. Funding will go toward improving the I-70 Mountain Corridor. The INFRA (Nationally Significant Multimodal Freight & Highway Projects) program awards grants for multimodal freight and highway projects that improve the safety, efficiency, and reliability of the movement of freight and people in and across rural and urban areas.

After nearly a year of testing and toll equipment installations, the Westbound I-70 Mountain Express Lane will begin tolling Thursday, July 7, 2022. The West Vail Pass Auxiliary Lanes project is nearing the completion of a planning process that started back in 2017. Public input through 10/21 is needed! With the completion of these planning steps and the grant money awarded to CDOT earlier this Summer, the Vail Pass Aux Lanes move closer to becoming a reality.
