I-70 NEWS

I-70 travelers will see work begin on the Frisco Exit 203 interchange project

If you travel the I-70 Mountain Corridor, you know the Frisco area can be a pinch point during busy weekends, holiday travel periods and peak recreation times. Now, the Colorado Department of Transportation is moving forward with improvements at the I-70 and CO 9 Exit 203 interchange in Frisco, a project designed to improve safety, mobility and traffic flow at one of the corridor’s key gateways. Construction began Monday, April 20, 2026, and is scheduled to continue through October 2027.

The project focuses on the interchange at Exit 203 and the nearby Lusher Court/Dillon Dam Road area, which experiences congestion during peak travel times. The project will improve the capacity of the westbound ramp and the I-70 bridge. It also improves eastbound ramps and the adjacent intersection to help traffic move more smoothly through the area.

For I-70 travelers, that matters. This stretch serves locals, visitors, freight traffic and transit alike, and when traffic stalls here, the effects ripple through the corridor. CDOT says the improvements are intended to reduce delays caused by congestion and crashes, improve overall traffic operations and support regional transit services like Bustang and Summit Stage.

Another major benefit is safety. In addition to improving vehicle movement through the interchange, the project adds bicycle and pedestrian connections across CO 9 and I-70. CDOT’s plans also include a new frontage road bypass under CO 9 connecting Dillon Dam Road and Lusher Court, which is intended to take pressure off the interchange near Exit 203.

What does that mean for drivers? In the long run, expect a more efficient interchange, better ramp operations and a smoother experience moving through this busy part of Summit County. For mountain corridor travelers, that can help reduce one more bottleneck on a route where small slowdowns can quickly turn into bigger backups.

During the first construction season, no full closures are expected, and most lane closures on I-70 and CO 9 will happen at night. Daytime work is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday, with occasional Sunday work as needed.
