COLORADO PASSENGER VEHICLE TRACTION LAW – CELEBRATE COLORADO TIRE CHECK WEEK

Did you know that March 12-19 is Colorado Tire Check Week? The Colorado Department of Transportation is partnering with tire partners across the state for the inaugural Colorado Tire Check Week to provide courtesy tire checks for Coloradans. The free tire checks aim to help motorists ensure their vehicles meet the Passenger Vehicle Traction Law standards during what is historically Colorado’s snowiest month. Learn more and find participating tire shops here

From Sept. 1 to May 31, the Passenger Vehicle Traction Law is active on the I-70 corridor from Dotsero to Morrison. When the Traction law is in place, all motorists are required to have EITHER:

  1. 4WD or AWD vehicle and 3/16-in. tread depth;
  2. Tires with a mud and snow designation (M+S icon) and 3/16-in. tread depth;
  3. Winter tires (mountain-snowflake icon) and 3/16-in. tread depth;
  4. Tires with an all-weather rating by the manufacturer and 3/16-in. tread depth; or
  5. Chains or an approved alternative traction device

Motorists driving with inadequate equipment when a Traction Law or Chain Law is in effect could be fined more than $130. If a motorist blocks I-70 due to inadequate equipment when a Traction Law or Chain Law is in effect, they could be fined more than $650.

Save money, drive safely and protect others by checking your tires before your next trip to the mountains!
