I-70 FLOYD HILL PROJECT CONSTRUCTION BEGINS JULY 6

On July 6, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and contractor partner, Kraemer North America, will begin construction on the I-70 Floyd Hill Project, which will improve mobility and increase safety along an eight-mile stretch of the I-70 Mountain Corridor from west of Evergreen to eastern Idaho Springs.

Construction will start on the East Section, a four-mile stretch that spans from County Road 65 to the bottom of Floyd Hill. In July, motorists can expect overnight lane and ramp closures to set up the work zone, narrowed lane widths, reduced speeds and trucks entering and exiting the work zone.

With construction anticipated to stretch through 2028, CDOT and Kraemer North America are committed to minimizing impacts to residents and motorists. As one of the state’s most crucial routes, the contractor will keep all lanes and ramps open during peak traffic hours, except during safety-critical work like rock blasting.

Starting in late-July, motorists can expect 20-minute traffic holds resulting in up to 45 minutes of delay in both directions of I-70 for rock scaling and blasting. For rock scaling, these operations could occur up to four times a day, Mondays through Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., during off-peak travel for approximately two weeks. Beginning in August, rock blasting will occur one time per day and up to two times per week, Mondays through Thursdays,9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Fridays, 9 a.m. to noon, through early 2024. Motorists can expect additional rock blasting in the West and Central sections as construction begins on those sections. Notifications will be sent out to residents and motorists via text alerts, hotline updates and e-blasts.

Throughout construction, lane closure hours will vary based on season, day of week, number of lanes being closed and the travel direction.
