With the ski season just underway, this is a great time to review the Passenger Traction and Chain Laws. Colorado has two laws designed to keep travelers safe, traffic moving, and roads open — the Passenger Traction Law (Code 15) and the Passenger Vehicle Chain Law (Code 16). When issued, the Traction Law requires motorists to have snow tires, tires with mud/snow (M+S) designation, or a four-wheel/all-wheel drive vehicle. All tires, regardless of the vehicle, must have a minimum one-eighth inch tread. If weather conditions worsen, the Passenger Vehicle Chain Law may go into effect, meaning all vehicles will be required to have tire chains or an alternative traction device (like AutoSock). Failure to comply with either law, especially if a motorist delays or blocks traffic, may result in a fine ranging from $130-$650. Check to make sure your tires are in good shape with the quarter test!
